Some of the theories say that the coronavirus originated fromits lab and that its researchers secretly sold experimental animals in the wetmarket. Theletter “P” stands for pathogen, the higher the number after it, the moredangerous the pathogen.
Arating of P4 designates a lab as a maximum-security area.
And theWuhan bio-lab is one of few in the world with such a rating.

In 2018, wefinally got national accreditation for experimental activities in the lab. Thismeant that China would have its own lab for research on deadly viruses. AndChina’s biosafety lab system began to take shape.”

As visitors,we were granted special access after identity and security checks. With thehelp of a staff member at the lab, we entered the P4 lab, but found ourselvesconfined to the hallways due to security requirements.

“A P4lab comes with a biosafety platform to ensure researchers are safe from thepathogens they work on and that the pathogens stay within the lab. We have acomplex system for electricity, air filtration, emergency shower, automations,fire safety and life support. All these facilities work to ensure anegative-pressure confined space.”

The P4 labis mainly used for research on deadly viruses, especially those without a knowncure or a vaccine.
It cantake nearly half an hour for each person to enter or exit the lab.
Personnelmust wear positive-pressure suits, which feature hoses for breathable air.
Allwaste items will undergo biosafety disposal and sterilization via hightemperature and pressure facilities.

P4实验室主要用来研究烈性病毒，尤其是一些没有已知可治疗的药物或疫苗的病毒。研究人员进入或者离开实验室的单向安全流程通常需要半小时左右。
