The opening segment of the 137th China Import and Export Fair, also known as the Canton Fair, themed "Advanced Manufacturing," concluded on April 19 with a notable increase in international participation. According to the organizers, overseas buyer attendance rose by more than 20% compared to the same period of the 135th edition, highlighting sustained demand for Chinese-made goods despite rising trade frictions between China and the U.S.
Amid U.S. tariff hikes, many exhibitors report growing interest from buyers in emerging markets, such as Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa. This shift is prompting companies to tailor their products to local preferences rather than relying solely on traditional Western markets.

The strong turnout in Phase 1 of the 137th Canton Fair reflects a broader and more intentional structural pivot in China's export strategy. The profile of international buyers indicates that many Chinese manufacturers are rebalancing their market portfolios to lessen dependence on any single economy, particularly those affected by increasing protectionist measures.

With Phase Two scheduled for April 23–27, 2025, visitors can anticipate a showcase of consumer goods, gifts, and home products—ranging from cutting-edge household electronics to everyday kitchenware. This will be followed by Phase Three from May 1–5, 2025, which will feature sectors such as textiles and garments, medical and health products, agricultural equipment, and automotive components.
The Canton Fair continues to serve as both a marketplace and a mirror—a real-time reflection of global economic dynamics and China's evolving role within them.
